Besides being a counselor, I'm a certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner.
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine that focuses on resolving and healing trauma-related symptoms and distress.
It recognizes that trauma is not just a issue at the level of mind but also at the level of the body, impacting the nervous system and the body as a whole.
Overall, Somatic Experiencing provides a holistic and body-centered approach to trauma healing, recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit by addressing the physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of trauma.
At the core of Somatic Experiencing is the understanding that the body has an innate capacity to heal itself from traumatic experiences.
Trauma can overwhelm the nervous system, leading to hyperarousal or hypoarousal.
Hyperarousal is when a person experiences symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, and hypervigilance. On the other hand, hyperarousal manifests as dissociation, numbness, and disconnection.
SE helps individuals regulate their nervous system, moving them away from these extreme states towards a more balanced state of calm and vitality.
This process helps individuals build resilience and expand their capacity to tolerate and integrate trauma-related sensations.
By focusing on the physiological aspects of trauma and promoting self-regulation, I support individuals in their journey toward recovery, resilience, and a renewed sense of safety and empowerment.
